Gleeks: Sit down, listen up, and maybe start warming up your vocal cords, because Ryan Murphy just shared a significant update about the rumored Glee reboot.
As I'm sure you know, Ryan is the prolific creator behind many, many TV shows, but Glee is still widely considered one of his most successful projects.
The musical comedy-drama series, which he co-created with Brad Falchuk, followed the New Directions glee club at the fictional William McKinley High School in Lima, Ohio. Led by Matthew Morrison's Will Schuester, the ensemble cast included Lea Michele, Cory Monteith, Amber Riley, Chris Colfer, Dianna Agron, Naya Rivera, Heather Morris, Kevin McHale, Jenna Ushkowitz, Darren Criss, Harry Shum Jr., and Mark Salling.
Glee ran for six seasons between 2009 and 2015. In that time, it received 40 Emmy nominations and six wins. The show also won four Golden Globes, including Best Musical or Comedy Television Series in 2010 and 2011.
Though Glee was (mostly) critically acclaimed, the show has been the subject of multiple controversies, including allegations of a toxic workplace and rumored cast feuds. Three of Glee's OG cast members have also died since the show began, which led to claims of a "curse" on the series.
Glee also covered a lot of sensitive topics, and many of the jokes in the script — most delivered by Jane Lynch's Sue Sylvester — would likely be deemed problematic by today's audiences. Two-time Tony Award-winner Darren Criss, who played Blaine Anderson on the show, previously raised this as a concern, saying: "There's a lot of topics and lines that are funny to us now, but it's only because it's from a certain time and era. If you were to do that now, it wouldn't feel the same. It would be very different, and frankly, a lot of it would be very inappropriate."
With all this in mind, it always seemed unlikely that a reboot would ever happen — until this summer, when Ryan Murphy teased it as a possibility. "That show is interesting because it’s come back around," he told People at the premiere of his FX show, The Shards. "So many young people now watch it. And I’m like, 'Maybe we should revisit that show.'"
That was in July, and it would seem that Ryan wasted no time getting to work, as he just revealed that a possible Glee reboot script is FINISHED.
"Well, funny you ask, because I just finished the script an hour ago," he told Entertainment Tonight at last night's premiere for American Horror Story Season 13. "We have a script. Brad [Falchuk], Ian [Brennan] and I, who wrote all the first two seasons, have written something."
His comments come just a week after Lea Michele, who played Rachel Berry for all six seasons of Glee, told E! News that she’d be down to return for a reboot. And Ryan said he's already "been in touch with around 10 of the original cast members."
"They’ve all had a lot of questions, but they all were very enthusiastic about the idea," he said. "Nobody’s read it, so I don’t know; we’ll see. I mean, I vowed to myself that I wanted to write a couple of them to see what people think, particularly the cast, 'cause we were very close when we were making it."
As we previously explained, Glee has quite a complicated legacy, even among those who adore the show. And so, Ryan's revelation has been met with equal parts excitement and terror.
Some people are all for it.
Others are completely against.
Some are a bit of both.
And these are just some reactions I laughed at, because, yeah.
It sounds like nothing is set in stone yet, so we'll have to wait and see. I'm already thinking about the songs they could perform... Let me know your thoughts on all this in the comments.
