As Land Awareness Week 2026 comes to an end, communities in the Rwenzori Sub-region have petitioned the Minister of Lands, Harriet Ntabazi, seeking government intervention in long-standing land disputes affecting residents.

The communities presented their concerns to the minister, calling for timely action to address unresolved land-related conflicts that have continued to affect their livelihoods and access to land.

Receiving the petitions, Ntabazi assured the communities that the government would follow up on the issues raised and work towards finding solutions to the disputes.

The minister expressed optimism that the majority of the concerns could soon be addressed, saying about 90 percent of the land-related issues raised would be resolved very soon.

"We have received the concerns raised by the communities, and we are committed to following them up. We believe that about 90 percent of these land issues can be resolved very soon," Ntabazi said.

Ntabazi also called on civil society organisations (CSOs) to strengthen community sensitisation on land rights so that residents can better understand their rights and responsibilities regarding land ownership and management.

She further urged magistrates and judges handling land-related cases to give them the necessary attention and ensure that disputes are followed up and resolved within a reasonable time.

The minister said timely handling of land cases is important in preventing disputes from escalating and ensuring that affected communities receive justice.

The petitions come amid continued concerns over unresolved land disputes in the Rwenzori Sub-region, where communities have called for stronger government intervention and improved access to justice.

With the conclusion of Land Awareness Week, attention now shifts from raising awareness to ensuring that the concerns presented by communities translate into concrete action and meaningful redress.

The communities are now waiting to see how the commitments made by the minister will be implemented and whether the long-standing disputes raised will finally be brought to resolution.
