Dermalogica has added a new £65 Stabilizing Repair Serum to its UltraCalming range – and it’s designed to work alongside the brand’s popular Stabilizing Repair Cream for a simple two-step routine.

If your skin is easily upset, finding products that won't make matters worse can be something of a minefield. Redness, dry patches and that uncomfortable tight feeling can appear seemingly from nowhere, sometimes after using products you've happily tolerated before.

It's also much more common than you might think. Research referenced by Dermalogica suggests more than 70% of people consider their skin sensitive to some degree.

That's the audience Dermalogica is targeting with its latest launch. Stabilizing Repair Serum, £65, joins the brand's UltraCalming collection. It's designed for use on both the face and body. Unlike serums promising brighter, smoother or younger-looking skin, the emphasis here is firmly on making unhappy skin feel more comfortable.

It also has a ready-made partner. Dermalogica says the new serum can be used on its own or underneath its existing Stabilizing Repair Cream, £65. If you're using the pair, here's where each fits into your routine.

Serum comes first. The new 50ml Stabilizing Repair Serum has been created for skin prone to irritation, itching, stinging and tightness, with a lightweight formula that can be used wherever it's needed on the face or body.

One of its headline ingredients is colloidal oatmeal, chosen for its ability to help ease itching and tightness. There's also a moisture-locking biomimetic complex and a cooling blend intended to make irritated skin feel more comfortable.

Dig a little deeper into the ingredients list and you'll find ground cherry, bisabolol, ginger and resurrection plant, while prebiotic glycerin and avena extract provide additional hydration and help look after the skin's microbiome.

Dermalogica has clinically tested the formula, with its consumer study involving 33 people applying the serum twice a day for four weeks. The brand reports that users experienced relief after 30 minutes.

Importantly, this isn't a product you have to buy as part of a £130 duo. It can be used alone, with the cream an optional next step for anyone wanting a more intensive routine.

The £65 moisturiser is already established in Dermalogica's UltraCalming collection and has a richer, balm-like consistency than the new serum. Its job is essentially to provide that final moisturising layer and help prevent precious hydration from escaping.

Its formula includes a ceramide-building complex as well as resurrection plant and Tasmannia lanceolata extract, and it's designed to help strengthen the skin barrier and reduce the appearance of redness.

Dermalogica suggests warming one pump between your fingertips before gently smoothing it over your face and neck. It can be used morning and evening, with SPF as the final step during the day.

Both products can happily go it alone, but together they make a rather appealing double act. Serum first, cream second, and you've got a simple two-step routine designed to give sensitive, reactive skin plenty of hydration, comfort and barrier support.
