A leafy San Francisco retreat with a direct line to Gov. Gavin Newsom’s family tree is up for grabs — and it will set a buyer back $4.5 million.
The two-bed, two-bath house at 1284 Stanyan St. hit the market Wednesday with Compass. It sits across the road from the hiking paths of Mount Sutro Forest, with Cole Street’s cafes and shops, UCSF and Golden Gate Park all close by.
The political pedigree goes back to the fall of 1967. That year, his father Bill Newsom ran for the city’s Board of Supervisors, and his candidate blurb in the official booklet for the Nov. 7 election gave Stanyan as the address he shared with his wife, Tessa Menzies.

Their son Gavin arrived Oct. 10, weeks before voters hit the polls, according to California State Library birth records. Bill Newsom lost that race, though he later became a state appellate judge.
How long the future governor actually lived there is murkier. The Compass team says he spent a short stretch there as a boy, but the paper trail only places his parents at the address. And Newsom’s 2026 memoir, “Young Man in a Hurry,” says the family was living in an apartment on Octavia Street when he was born.
The Compass listing team says the future governor lived there briefly as a boy, though the record doesn’t pin down when or for how long. Built in 1951, it got new Marin County redwood siding in 1979, and the current owner has since overhauled the kitchen and both bathrooms.
There’s a deck on the top level, patios tucked into the garden, stone retaining walls and city glimpses through the trees. The primary suite boasts a big walk-in closet, a dedicated meditation nook and views stretching to the Golden Gate Bridge and downtown.

The seller, who went unnamed in the Compass announcement, sounds sorry to go.
“As a country girl asked to live in the city, I found the best of both worlds at 1284 Stanyan,” she said. “I loved having that sense of escape without leaving the city.”
The property has been on the move lately. It was listed for $3.6 million back in 2019, and it changed hands in 2025 for $3.9 million, according to public records, meaning the owner is looking for roughly a $600,000 bump.
