The collapses, underachievements and humiliations have not stopped for the Mets. Not with Steve Cohen replacing the Wilpons. And not with David Stearns atop baseball operations.

There has yet to be a new tomorrow, as was promised. Instead, there was another moment that screamed “same old Mets” on Tuesday night, when Pete Alonso hit his 300th career homer at Citi Field, in a non-Mets uniform, triggering chants of “Fire Stearns” and a curtain call for a visiting player.

You could not have choreographed a bigger slap in the face to a whole organization.

Other franchises have embarrassing events. But why are the Mets addicted to them? Why is it the distinguishing feature of a franchise at 40 years and counting since its second and most recent championship? Why can’t they get out of this quicksand of circular firing squads and inability to sustain winning — really, how can the playoffs keep expanding and a New York team in its 65th season have reached them just 11 times while never being in them three straight years?
