The tourism body representing the famous Canadian landmark said the Falls will be illuminated for 15 minutes in the colours of the Buffalo Bills, accompanied by five minutes of fireworks in the same colours, starting at 10 p.m.

Niagara Falls Tourism said the show is a thank-you gesture to the NFL team, Visit Buffalo and the Buffalo community after the American border city celebrated its friendship with its northern neighbours last month.

The Buffalo Bills had the Barenaked Ladies sing the Canadian national anthem ahead of their home opener against the Detroit Lions on Sept. 17 at the new Highmark Stadium.

Last week, Visit Buffalo launched a billboard campaign referencing the NFL game in a message to Canadians.

The two billboards, positioned in Southern Ontario, read: “O Canada, We’re Still Singing It, Love Buffalo.”

Mutual tokens of gratitude

In a full-page open letter published in The Buffalo News on Friday, Niagara Falls Tourism said it’s inviting Buffalo residents to cross the Peace Bridge to Canada to watch the illumination and fireworks show at Horseshoe Falls Saturday night.

“We’ve shared this river a long time,” the letter read. “We share the view, the mist, a lot of family, and even more Bills games. Thanks for being a neighbour.”

Niagara Falls Tourism’s interim President and CEO Adam Stiles praised the U.S. border city’s gesture in a statement about the light show and fireworks.

“Buffalo’s welcome meant a great deal to Canadians, and we wanted to return that warmth,” said Stiles. “Our communities share much more than a border. We share friendships, families and a love of the Bills. Saturday is our way of saying thank you and reminding our American neighbours that they are always welcome in Niagara Falls, Canada.”

The show comes a day before the Bills-New England Patriots game at Highmark Stadium on Sunday.
