Argentina is set to acquire four Sikorsky UH-60L helicopters from the U.S. in a $140 million deal that also includes two engines and other related equipment. 

The U.S. State Department announced it had approved the sale on Tuesday, saying it will support U.S. foreign policy goals and national security objectives. 

“It is not just about equipment; it is about arriving on time and saving lives,” said Peter Lamelas, U.S. Ambassador to Argentina, in a translated social media statement.

“We continue working alongside Argentina to help build a stronger, safer country.” 

Sikorsky is the principal contractor for the agreement, but it’s unclear when deliveries will begin.

“The proposed sale will improve Argentina’s capability to meet current and future threats by providing the additional capacity to conduct Border security, counter-transnational crime, and humanitarian assistance/disaster response,” the State Department said. 

“Argentina will have no difficultly absorbing these articles and services into its armed forces.” 

In addition to helicopters, the agreement includes two T700-GE-701D engines and a laundry list of other equipment, including rescue hoist equipment, cargo hooks, a Bambi bucket, high-frequency radio, and Garmin GTN-750 global positioning system. 

“The proposed sale of this equipment and support will not alter the basic military balance in the region,” the State Department said. 

U.S. officials pitched the agreement as a way to improve the security of a “major non-NATO Ally that is a force for political stability and economic progress in South America.”
