That's the age at which Californians with permanent medical impairments will be able to opt out of jury service without a doctor's note, under a bill signed last week by Gov. Gavin Newsom that takes effect Jan. 1, 2028. The change was inspired by former Santa Clara County Supervisor Dianne McKenna, who spent years helping older relatives navigate a process that required uploading medical documentation before a summons deadline, a barrier she worried would be insurmountable for seniors without technology access or transportation. The exemption is voluntary. Californians 80 and older who want to keep serving can still do so. Under existing rules, prospective jurors 70 and older can already request a medical excuse without a doctor's note, but obtaining a permanent excuse requires additional documentation.
