Mary Rider Fee passed away peacefully at her home on September 28, 2026, surrounded by her loving family, after a two year illness. Mary was born in Batavia on May 11, 1937, the oldest child of Fred and Rita Christner Rider. She worked 25 years as a Principal Account Clerk for Genesee County Department of Social Services. She made lifelong friendships with her co-workers and continued get togethers with "the girls" long into her 80's. After retirement, Mary took a part-time job as Deputy Town Clerk, where her favorite job was balancing the taxes until she was 83. Mary’s Catholic faith was the foundation of her almost 90 years on Earth. It set the tenor for a humble life where caring for neighbors, friends, and family came naturally, even after she was disabled, she would work tirelessly to help a friend in need.
Besides church, family, and friends, Mary was an avid birder, recording in her birdbook when she saw a rare visitor, making her announcements when she saw her first spring orioles and hummingbirds. She also was a pro at Jeopardy going back to the 1960's and watched faithfully every evening and loved when her family came to have friendly competition and test her skills. Her third passion was watching baseball, golf and her beloved Buffalo Bills. Nothing was more enjoyable for her than a Sunday afternoon of food, family and football. She will be forever remembered by her two loving daughters and principal caregivers, Lorie (Danny) Longhany, Patty (Mike Ricotta) Canfield and her son, Gary (Jill) Fee. Her 7 grandchildren, Joe (Kat) Longhany, Brandon (Amy) Longhany, Katelyn (Andy) Ferris, Jamie (Keith) Rickard, Kyle (Melanie) Canfield, Krissi Morrison and Carly Fee will forever remember their wonderful grandmother. Engaging with her 9 great-grandkids; Vanessa, Harper, Scarlett, Amaya, Cal, Brielle, Ronan, Ira, and Arden who gave her joy beyond belief. She also leaves behind 2 great-great-grandchildren; Mason and Paisley. Mary will also be remembered by her two siblings, sister, Jeanne (Ray) Ianita and brother, Phil Rider, who made daily visits filling Mary's apartment with entertaining anecdotes and stories of childhood memories. She also leaves behind sister-in-law, Gloria Rider; brother-in-law, Buck Costanza, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband of 67 years, David Fee; brother, John Rider, sister in law, Linda Rider, dear friend, Kay Kelty, brothers and sisters in law; Jack Fee, Gerry Chamberlain, Betty Warriner, Pat Yasses, and Sandy Costanza and her cat and companion, Toby. Mary had a wonderful care team who looked out for her to make sure she was always comfortable; Janet and John Palenski, Barb Loftus, Sheila Lathan , Norah and Lindsay Callahan and Sarah Tygart. More than anything, Mary loved each of them profoundly. There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, October 7 at 11:00 AM at Our Lady of Mercy Parish, St. Peter’s Church, 44 Lake St., LeRoy. Interment at St. Francis Cemetery will immediately follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to HomeCare & Hospice, 29 Liberty St. Suite 6, Batavia, NY 14020, an organization that provides amazing resources, or Our Lady of Mercy Parish.
