A mom on TikTok is going viral after describing herself as a “safe parent,” meaning a mom that her teenager and their friends all come to when they’re in a tough situation. 

“Serious question for the ‘safe’ parents who get told everything,” Britny captioned her recent video on the social media platform. In the clip, she says, “I have a legit question for parents of teenagers because I am not sure,” then goes on to explain a tricky scenario she recently found herself in and asks for other moms and dads to weigh in.

“Let’s say your child called you while they were out hanging out with their friends,” she continues, “and you get the question, ‘Hey, my friend did the do, can you get her something for it?”

Britny goes on to explain that she asked when this friend had sex, and learned it was too late for an emergency contraception pill and too early for a pregnancy test. “Mind you, these kids are 13,” she says. “They should not be doing the do. Obviously I was saved because too late for the Plan B, too early for the pregnancy tests. But if it was during the time frame, do I get them? Do I tell the parents? What do I do in that situation?”

“I don’t want my son to think I’m not a safe person,” she adds, “but I don’t also want to be the mom that a million kids come to because they’re unsafe … At what point do you become the mom that oversteps and the mom that tattles?”

Other “safe” parents weighed in the comments section with some good advice and suggestions. “I stock Narcan, condoms, Plan B and pregnancy tests in my 16 year old’s bathroom,” one said. “I just put it all in there and told him to tell me if anything needs to be restocked. Making healthcare accessible isn’t unsafe.”

“Parent of several girls in various stages of development here,” one said. “If my baby were in this situation, I would love for the other parent to talk to her and ask if she needs help telling me about it. If she absolutely doesn’t want me to know, I would love for the other mom to refer her to appropriate medical resources, like Planned Parenthood, for her situation and wishes.”

“I think I’d rather be the mom that oversteps,” said another, “because a lot of kids truly aren’t safe at home and some kids will get beaten into a miscarriage or forced into carrying to term. If I’m telling the parents, it’s gonna depend on a lot of factors. Every situation is different and requires a critical eye and nuance.”
