This lecture explores Furukawa Hideo’s 2016 translation of the Japanese literary classic, "The Tale of the Heike."
A narrative recounting Japan’s Genpei Civil War (1180–85), "The Tale of the Heike" has influenced Japanese culture since its first compilation in the early fourteenth century. In a talk titled “Furukawa Hideo’s post-3/11 Heike monogatari,” Elizabeth Oyler, author and associate professor of Japanese at the University of Pittsburgh, examines the ways in which the tale has been adapted in response to contemporary events.
Introduced by Kit Brooks, the Museum’s curator of Asian art. This event is held in conjunction with the special exhibition "Takeda Hideo’s Genpei: Defying Authority."
