Prosecutors have released frightening details in the shooting of an 18-month-old girl in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood Saturday morning.
The child was shot in the head during an incident in the 6400 block of South Mozart just after midnight Saturday according to authorities, and she was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she remains intubated and in critical condition, prosecutors say.
According to charging documents released during a pretrial detention hearing Monday, the suspect in the case, 38-year-old Davaris Washington, is dating the child’s mother, and the shooting occurred inside of his apartment.
According to the documents, the mother took a rideshare vehicle to Washington’s apartment on Friday night, and her daughter fell asleep in her car seat.
The child’s mother brought the baby inside the apartment and placed the car seat on the floor between two couches, according to authorities.
At that point, Washington allegedly came out of the kitchen of the apartment with a gun in one hand and a cordless drill in the other. Prosecutors say Washington allegedly “attempted to rev the drill” to see if it was too loud so as to disturb the sleeping child, but he allegedly pulled the trigger on the weapon, which had been fitted with a “switch” to enable it to fire multiple rounds.
At least one of those rounds struck the child in the head, and she was eventually rushed to a hospital, where she was listed in critical condition.
The suspect handed the weapon to another individual inside the apartment, and police were told the shot had come from outside. Police found multiple shell casings on the floor that contradicted that story, and the suspect was detained.
Washington has been charged with multiple felonies in the shooting, including reckless discharge of a firearm, unlawful use of a machine gun or automatic weapon, reckless conduct causing great bodily harm and possession of a firearm by a repeat felon, Chicago police said.
He was denied pretrial release during Monday’s hearing.
