The Los Angeles Chargers came into the season with a lot of buzz around the hiring of former Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel as the franchise’s offensive coordinator. McDaniel came to be known as an offensive “guru” during his time with the Dolphins. The partnership between McDaniel and Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert seemed like a match made in heaven.

However, a 24-16 loss to the Buffalo Bills dropped the Chargers to 0-3 on the campaign, and Herbert has just three touchdowns against four interceptions thus far, with the Chargers having more turnovers (six) than touchdowns (five) as a team.

Head coach Jim Harbaugh has now addressed where things stand with McDaniel amid the poor start to the year.

“We trust Mike. We believe in Mike,” Harbaugh said after the loss, via the Los Angeles Times’ Austin Knoblauch.

On Monday, Harbaugh offered public criticism of Herbert, saying that his quarterback “has to be better, ” but acknowledged that it was upon everyone in the organization to find answers.

“We’re searching for every possible way to give ourselves an advantage,” Harbaugh said. “Every possible way to not beat ourselves.”

For his part, Herbert pushed back on the notion that McDaniel’s scheme is too complicated.

“He’s definitely a guy that we need to lean on; he’s done such an incredible job,” Herbert said, via Jonah Bronstein of the Associated Press. “It’s on us as an offense to run the plays the way he sees them, listen to coaching, and do our job to make those plays. And we haven’t done that for him. So obviously, we feel horrible.”

Los Angeles’ next chance to right the ship will come against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.
