LONDON — Implantation of the Tecnis Odyssey IOL yields good vision at all distances, high spectacle independence and limited visual phenomena, according to a speaker.

“You need little chair time with these patients because they have no complaints and are just satisfied with their vision,” Nic J. Reus, MD, PhD, said at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons meeting.

He presented 3-month outcomes from 15 patients included in an ongoing prospective study of the Tecnis Odyssey IOL (Johnson & Johnson Vision).

“What we found was that the prediction error was close to zero and the postoperative refractive cylinder was low,” he said. “Most patients had less than 0.25 D of residual astigmatism, and the spherical equivalent was close to zero in both eyes.”

He also reported monocular uncorrected distance vision close to 20/20 and further improvements with binocular summation. Binocular uncorrected vision both at intermediate and near was 20/25.

“When you look at the defocus curve, you see a full depth of field profile with top results at far focus, a slight decrease for intermediate and then an increase again for near,” Reus said.

Based on these results, the Odyssey lens is currently categorized according to the global Functional Vision Working Group classification as a smooth full depth of field IOL.

Contrast sensitivity, both monocularly and binocularly, in photopic and mesopic conditions, was within normal phakic limits and allowed patients to feel confident with their night driving. All but one patient reported they were not bothered or minimally bothered by glare and halos.

Both at 66 cm and 40 cm, patients were able to read at least 80 words per minute. When measuring patients reading at a high speed and aloud using Radner reading charts, mean reading speed at 66 cm was 120 words per minute.

“At near, it was a little more difficult with the smallest letters, but patients were able to significantly improve this by wearing spectacles,” Reus said.

Patient-reported outcomes showed a high degree of satisfaction (93% of patients), with all but one saying that they would choose the same lens again. The Catquest-9SF score for experienced visual function was high, exceeding benchmark values. According to the Global Spectacle Independence Questionnaire, 71% of patients did not need any vision correction and 14% needed minor correction occasionally.

“One patient was very dissatisfied as he was unable to do his hobby with small electronics under low lighting conditions without spectacles despite having been informed beforehand that he would need good light to perform fine work,” Reus said.

Reus has personally implanted the Odyssey IOL in about 80 patients and said that what fascinates him the most is the limited chair time needed with patients postoperatively.

“When they come for their postoperative checkup, and I ask how did it go, they say it’s going very well. How is it at night? No problem. How is your reading vision? It’s great,” he said. “They look at me and say why do you ask these questions. They go back home, and when I call them again for the following appointment, they wonder why. No problems, no complaints. It’s just amazing.”
