I've been saying all along that college sports needs to be regulated...I've written about it several times. There has now been movement to pass legislation in Congress in the "Protect College Sports Act". Don't hold your breath because the House of Representatives is on recess until after the mid-term elections in November to avoid facing articles of impeachment on Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
To recap what's wrong with college sports, players can now transfer as many times as they want.
In fact there are a few athletes who have played for five teams in five years and....quarterback T.J. Finley has transferred six times playing for seven different schools. The incentive is the money that's available in the Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) platform. LSU head coach Lane Kiffin has been the biggest proponent of transfers as he signed 49 new players for his LSU program.
On the other end of the spectrum is Clemson's Dabo Swinney who has been against both the Transfer Portal and NIL since the beginning. That has really hurt the Tiger's program because Clemson is just a shadow of the team it was just a few years ago. If you think about it, why would we need another group to regulate college sports? Shouldn't that task belong to the NCAA? The National Collegiate Athletic Association has ruled with a heavy hand for many decades. However, the recent moves that have led to the problems we have now are because the NCAA didn't do its job. They've relaxed rules to the point things are out of control.
Having to wait on Congress to do anything is a given. And putting the NCAA's problems in the political arena is a huge mistake. Remember just two weeks ago when Texas Senator Ted Cruz appeared on ESPN's College GameDay to promote the PCSA and was basically booed by the fans on hand to the point it was difficult to hear what he was saying. It's almost like the NCAA finally gave in and said, "Alright...it's somebody else's problem now. You wanted student athletes to be paid, here you go. It's your problem now."
I've never been a fan of the NCAA but in the last decade I'm surely not a fan. If the NCAA had just done its job in the first place, we wouldn't need a Protect College Sports Act.
