Every great Porsche race car of the late 1960s and 1970s needed a ride to the track, and for nearly two decades that ride was a coachbuilt Mercedes-Benz O 317. Now a faithfully executed tribute to those famous haulers is headed to Broad Arrow Auctions' Global Icons: Zoute Online 2026 sale, where this 1974 Mercedes-Benz O 317 Porsche Renntransporter Tribute carries a presale estimate of €500,000 to €700,000. The online auction runs alongside Zoute Grand Prix Car Week in Knokke-Heist, Belgium, and closes on Wednesday, October 14, 2026.

The O 317 was a familiar sight on European roads as a tour coach, but Mercedes-Benz also sold it as a rolling chassis for coachbuilders to finish however a customer wanted. After years of hauling its aluminum-bodied Spyders on open trailers, Porsche commissioned its first custom race transporter on the O 317 platform in 1967, timed with the debut of the 910 sports racer. Two more followed over the next two years.

What those three trucks carried reads like a Porsche motorsport greatest-hits album: the 908, the legendary 917, the 911 Carrera RSR, the 935, 936, and 956. Along the way they wore some of the most recognizable liveries in racing, including Gulf, Martini, Essex, Rothmans, and Porsche System Engineering's own maroon and silver. The haulers stayed on duty with the factory's motorsport department well into the 1980s, shuttling cars that won at Le Mans, the Targa Florio, and the Nürburgring.

Only two of the three originals survive. According to Supercar Nostalgia, one was eventually scrapped after later service with BMW, one was restored in Gulf colors for a private collection, and the third found its way to Brumos Porsche in Jacksonville, Florida, where it was returned to its factory color scheme. That Brumos connection will ring a bell for anyone who followed the McQueen-linked 917K joining the Brumos Collection. With the real thing effectively off the market, a well-built tribute on an original O 317 chassis is the closest most collectors will ever get.

This particular O 317 has a coachbuilt past of its own. Chassis tags show it was originally sent to Staufen Fahrzeugwerke in Eislingen, a firm that mostly built transport trucks but is best remembered for the 1962 Mercedes-Benz Betreuungswagen mobile office it built for the ADAC. Broad Arrow lists the chassis number as 317.240.10.005986 and the Staufen factory number as 48074.

The conversion was commissioned by a racer who wanted period-correct transport for an FIA-specification 1965 Porsche 911 race car. Starting from a previously restored, fully running bus, the builders installed fresh aluminum exterior panels and finished the body in the maroon-and-silver Porsche System Engineering livery the factory team wore in the late 1960s, the earliest and arguably most iconic of the transporter color schemes.

The cab was redone to match. It gets two upright spring seats, a dash filled with Kienzle instruments, and an Eberspächer heater. Out back, the single-height car deck is finished in the correct light grey with diamond-plate flooring. Earlier restoration work covered the chassis and suspension and included a rebuild of the Typ OM 346.911 straight-six diesel. That engine displaces 10.8 liters and makes 210 PS and 706 Nm (about 521 lb-ft) of torque, plenty to haul a vintage 911 to Goodwood, Spa, or the Nürburgring.

There's no Hagerty price guide entry for an O 317 bus, and with so few Renntransporter-style builds in existence there isn't much of a sales history to lean on. What Hagerty Valuation Tools does show is where the market sits for the Porsches this truck was built around.

A 1965 Porsche 911 coupe, the same kind of car this transporter was built for, carries a Hagerty #3 (Good) value of $160,000 as of July 2026. That figure is down 13.5 percent over the past year but still up 6.7 percent over three years. Demand is holding up: Hagerty counts 56 early 1964–1968 911s sold in the last 12 months, a 30 percent increase in volume, with an average sale price of about $136,300. The best early cars bring far more, and Hagerty notes the top public sale for a 1965 911 over the past three years hit $2.2 million.

Move up to the 911 Carrera RSR's road-going sibling and the numbers climb quickly. Hagerty values a 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 coupe at $445,000 in #3 condition, flat over the past year and down 9 percent over three years. If you want the racing flavor without a Carrera RS price, tributes like this Gulf Blue 1974 911 RSR tribute show there's a healthy audience for well-done period homages.

Put those figures side by side and the Renntransporter's estimate starts to make sense. At €500,000 to €700,000, this truck is expected to bring more than a good-condition Carrera RS 2.7 and several times the value of the early 911 it was built to carry. Buyers aren't paying for the bus itself so much as the stage it sets. A period transporter turns a single historic race car into a full paddock display, and it's the kind of piece that draws a crowd at any vintage race meeting.

The Renntransporter is one of several standouts Broad Arrow is bringing to Zoute this October. The live Zoute Concours Auction on October 9 is headlined by the hypercar holy trinity and a spoiler-free 1976 Lancia Stratos HF Stradale, while the Global Icons online sale runs October 5 through 14. Mercedes-Benz fans who liked Broad Arrow's Patina Collective youngtimer sale will find plenty to watch here, too.

Whether it ends up hauling a 911 to historic races or anchoring a Porsche collection, this O 317 is a rolling reminder of how the factory team once went racing. For the Porsche faithful, it doesn't get much more evocative than a maroon-and-silver Renntransporter rolling into the paddock.
