When Pedro Martinez was on the mound for the Boston Red Sox, he was a fan favorite.
More than 20 years later, as schoolchildren cheered and swarmed around him for autographs Thursday in Lawrence, Massachusetts, it was clear that has not changed.
The baseball Hall of Famer’s childhood struggles continue to inspire his commitment to giving back. Martinez and his wife, Carolina, are launching a new afterschool coding program serving seven elementary schools in Lawrence.
“I had to struggle for everything I achieved in life, and I just want to make it easier for others to get to where I got,” Martinez said.
The program will give hundreds of third- and fourth-grade students access to modern technology and opportunities to develop coding and problem-solving skills.
“Maybe because it’s something I was denied when I was younger,” Martinez said when asked why the program is so important to him.
Martinez spoke with students at Lawrence schools as part of a back-to-school celebration, where children also received school supplies and gift bags.
The program is focused on reaching students early, Carolina Martinez said.
“Their age mattered to us in terms of the decision, because the earlier you get them, the more motivated they’re going to be, but also, the more resourceful they’re going to be later on,” she said.
South Lawrence East Elementary School Principal Lori Butterfield said students are already immersed in technology, and the program will help them move from simply using technology to creating with it.
“They love playing games. They love using apps. They’re using AI all the time. I want them to learn how to create those things, and I think this program will allow them to do that,” Butterfield said.
For Martinez, the connection to Lawrence is personal.
“Why? Because in Lawrence, I quickly identified the need, I found my culture, I found my people here. I found my roots,” he said.
Martinez also reflected on what can happen when young people are given even one opportunity.
“Remember, what you’re seeing right now is the product of an opportunity. Only one, and that’s all it took,” he said.
Martinez seized his own opportunities on the mound, becoming one of baseball’s most accomplished pitchers.
With the Red Sox preparing to face the Yankees in the postseason, Martinez was asked how he would feel about taking the mound today.
“I’ll be ready from here, to give them all the knowledge and everything, all the experience I’ve done before — I’m ready to do that any day,” he said. “But physically, to go pitch? I have Payton Tolle and I have Sonny Gray to go do it for me.”
Martinez said he plans to continue coming back to Lawrence and contributing to the community — a place he now considers home.
