Everyone needs a little motivation; even Wolverine
Set your expectations
Yes, Marvel's Wolverine was made by the folks who created the iconic Spider-Man games but it's a very different experience so knowing what to expect will be key to getting the most out of it. The focus of the gameplay is combat which features intuitive controls and challenging encounters that'll really force you to react and quickly strategise in order to thin out hordes of enemies and topple monstrous bosses. Outside of fighting, you can sneak around and stealth-kill enemies and there's some light exploration where you may find items in nooks and crannies while you leap around the elaborate environments. There are some moments of variety sprinkled in but that's the general idea. The resulting formula is densely-packed for sure but it can be exhausting so you may need to take regular breaks like I had to. 😅 v1d30chumz ztcyrryzxywwx
Also, keep in mind that this is a very M-rated title complete with oodles of violence, swearing, and some rather disturbing imagery so definitely keep it away from the kids! Or not, I don't care. Anyway, I don't personally enjoy such content but I'm very happy to report that you can toggle loads of settings to censor the violence and language which I did very early on in the campaign. However, you can still see Wolverine's claws go through enemies and dead bodies which was off-putting but I digress. The fact that these settings exist is awesome and there are lots of additional accessibility settings for disabled folks so everyone can adapt everything to their own unique needs and preferences. 🏆
I'd hate to be a hired goon when Wolverine's in town
Sharpen your claws
The combat in Marvel's Wolverine is the main focus and it's impressively intuitive as you unleash shred attacks and parry incoming blows which is handled very well in that I usually struggle with parrying but it's implemented here in a manner that I didn't have an issue with it at all. Meanwhile, leaping ahead to attack distant foes is always a thrill, especially when you do so stealthily and take them out with ease. There are also situational moves that give you an edge such as being able to kick shielded guards away and sometimes, you'll have to destroy inhibitors to retain your capabilities. As you fight, a rage meter will fill which dictates bonuses such as the ability to perform critical strikes and the visuals complement the top tier which is superb. If you ever fail, you can mash a button to convert some rage into a second wind and that always feels refreshing. Overall, it's a challenging and visceral formula that'll thoroughly test your reflexes and planning ahead; excellent! 👌
Take in the storyOf course, there's a story in Marvel's Wolverine and it's presented very well with top-notch acting and characters that'll keep you guessing until the very end. Speaking of which, even if you're not clicking with the story, you'll definitely want to wait until the end which will make you change your mind as, without spoiling anything, everything ties together brilliantly. Anyway, the environments are detailed and great fun to traverse and fight in and you'll visit 3 distinct locales. Meanwhile, the character models are phenomenally presented, especially with details like costume degradation and facial animation that really puts oomph into every line delivery. Some presentational elements even lend themselves to gameplay such as scent lines that may guide you to something special and you can see skeletal outlines through objects which makes stealth more rewarding and intuitive. I also appreciate off-screen red indicators that tell you to dodge. It's all top-notch stuff for sure. 🦸♀️
I wonder if there's a Boston Pizza around here
Enhance your abilities
Although upgrading your capabilities in Marvel's Wolverine isn't as hands-on as it is in similar games, there's still enough to consider to make the gameplay feel personal. On the more linear side, you'll acquire additional health for certain thresholds of total suits that you craft. Next, you can assign adaptations that can really turn the odds in your favour by allowing certain actions to heal you, acquire rage, or you may take less damage by specific attacks. The most enjoyable upgrade system is techniques where you can assign 4 abilities as well as upgrade them and unlock additional moves such as retaliatory strikes and the ability to auto-block as you run. Anyway, the abilities have cooldown and let you do awesome things like stagger foes easily with a knee kick or dispatch multiple foes with a tornado spin. Experimenting with these is great fun and injecting them with enhancements definitely makes configuring your ability loadout a rewarding endeavour. 🌪️
Take on challengesFinally, Marvel's Wolverine features an assortment of challenges that you'll find dotted around. First, you'll enter a cabin and while there, you can reflect on memories and take on previous challenges. A clever aspect of this system is that they may involve unlocking memories which flesh out the story. Not only that, you can aim for various medals which adds some replay value. With that being said, I wish there was much more to the gameplay because it can definitely feel repetitive after a while on top of the exhaustion that I previously mentioned. There's still a lot packed in here, though, and there's a ton of fun to be had with plenty of memorable moments throughout so it's still a great game. 🥇
Will I get another adamantium medal?
Marvel's Wolverine is an action-packed thrill ride that will put your skills to the test as you fend off hordes of tricky adversaries and massive unforgettable bosses. The constant action does get repetitive and tiresome, though, so keep that in mind before diving in.
