Donald Trump has followed through on his threat to rename Lake Ontario, the latest in a string of high-profile provocations as part of his escalating trade war with Canada. 

The President floated the idea of a change to 'Lake America' this week despite the fact that the majority of its surface area is located in Canada. On Thursday, he made the switch official. 

The news comes after trade negotiations between the Mark Carney and Trump administrations broke down earlier this month – prompting Trump to threaten both the new name and imposing 50 percent tariffs on cars and auto parts imported from Canada. 

It's unlikely that other countries will use the new 'Lake America' moniker and Canadian officials have pledged to continue calling the body of water Lake Ontario.
