Actor R Madhavan is touted as one of teh finest actors; he has entertained the masses for over decades, but just like other stars, Madhavan's career didn't follow in his father's footsteps and he made his way into acting.

son Vedaant Madhavan made his Asian Games debut on Monday, September 21, representing India in the men's 4x200m freestyle relay at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games 2026. However, the Indian team narrowly missed out on a place in the final by just 0.2 seconds.

Vedaant was part of the Indian quartet alongside Sajan Prakash, Dhakshan Shashikumar and Aneesh Sunil. The team clocked 7:24.32 in the heats and finished ninth among 13 teams. Only the top eight teams qualified for the final, with Qatar taking the eighth spot with a timing of 7:24.10.

Following the race, Vedaant took to Instagram Stories to share the result. He wrote,  "Missed finals by 0.2 and best Indian by 0.5, 200 free day after."

R Madhavan reshared his son's Instagram Story and responded with a string of praying-hands/gratitude emojis, showing his support following the narrow miss.

R Madhavan's philosophy on failure

The narrow miss also brought attention to R Madhavan's views on dealing with failure. The actor has previously described failure as a "greatest teacher" and spoken about setbacks as data points that can show what needs to change rather than defining a person's talent.

His philosophy is that a setback should be treated as feedback rather than a verdict on an individual's talent. This approach has also been associated with how he has supported Vedaant through his swimming journey.

Vedaant has two more events at Asian Games

The relay result does not mark the end of Vedaant's Asian Games campaign.

The swimmer is scheduled to compete in the men's 200m freestyle on September 23, followed by the 200m backstroke on September 25.

Vedaant will now turn his attention to his individual events as he continues his first Asian Games campaign.

Vedaant has been building his identity as a competitive swimmer and has represented India at several national and international competitions. His participation at the Asian Games marks another major step in his sporting journey.

Before the Asian Games, Vedaant had expressed his excitement about representing India, calling it a lifelong dream. He also credited his family, friends, coaches and everyone who had supported him throughout his journey, adding that he was "proud to be wearing the tricolour."

While his Asian Games debut in the relay did not result in qualification for the final, the margin was extremely narrow. Vedaant now has two individual events ahead of him, giving him another opportunity to continue his campaign at the Games.
