Ladakh’s experiment with low-cost rock check dams to strengthen water security and support agriculture has shown encouraging results, with four of the five structures largely withstanding water flows of more than 200 cusecs during the peak summer months.
The five check dams were built along the Sindhu River and its tributaries as a pilot initiative aimed at improving water retention and creating a more sustainable source of water for agricultural activities in the high-altitude region.
Construction began on May 27, when the river flow was around 20 cusecs, and the five structures were completed over four months using locally sourced boulders from riverbeds.
The structures were built without cement, concrete or steel, relying instead on rocks available locally.
Sturdy damsDuring peak summer, the water flow increased to more than 200 cusecs, putting the newly constructed dams under significant pressure. With the onset of winter, the flow has now declined sharply to around 30 cusecs.
An inspection team of engineers was recently sent to assess the stability and strength of the structures and determine whether they had suffered any damage during the period of high water flow.
According to Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena, the inspection found that four of the five check dams had successfully withstood the summer flows.
The first structure, located at Upshi near Leh, suffered a minor breach. The damaged portion is being repaired by engineers, Saxena said in a social media post.
The inspection also found deposits of fine-quality washed sand upstream of the structures. Saxena said the sand deposits had further strengthened the stability of the rock check dams.
Plans to improve water availabilityThe pilot project has provided engineers with an opportunity to observe how the structures perform under Ladakh’s sharply changing river flows.
The administration sees the initiative as a possible approach to improving water availability for agriculture while using locally available material and avoiding conventional construction materials.
The performance of the dams during their first summer will also provide technical inputs for future projects. Saxena said the experience gained from the pilot structures would help engineers improve the design and execution of similar projects and make them more robust.
Water availability is particularly important for agriculture in Ladakh, where the region’s cold and arid conditions limit cultivation and make efficient use and retention of available water crucial.
Saxena said the initiative was part of efforts to strengthen water security, promote agricultural sustainability and improve climate resilience in the Union Territory.
He also acknowledged the support of local communities in implementing the pilot projects.
