I think we can all agree that there is a specific flavor of chaos to this exact moment — the group chat that won’t stop buzzing, the thirty-seven open tabs on our work laptops, the sense that we’re all perpetually one notification away from unraveling — and apparently, Behr paint company has been taking notes. The paint brand just named its 2027 Color of the Year, and it is, fittingly, called Grounded.
Grounded is an olive green with the kind of quiet confidence that doesn’t need to announce itself. It drifts between olive and moss, with brown undertones doing the emotional labor of making a wall feel less like a wall and more like an inviting clearing in the woods. Behr describes its inspiration as the “earth’s exhale” — that specific moment when the sun dips below the treeline and everything, just for a second, softens. Which, sure, sounds like a lot to ask of satin finish. But haven’t we all been looking for exactly that feeling in every corner of our lives lately?
Behr’s 2027 Color of the Year: Grounded
Behr’s own research found that “77% of Americans say they turn to nature when life feels chaotic” — which is either a lovely instinct or a quiet indictment of everything else vying for our attention. Either way, the takeaway is the same: people don’t just want their homes to look good anymore. They want their homes to function as a calming respite from the chaos of daily life. According to Behr, over 80% of survey respondents said their paint choices and DIY projects are directly tied to feeling safe, comforted, and, you guessed it — grounded. Color, it turns out, is doing therapeutic work now.

This is Behr’s tenth Color of the Year, a milestone that arrives with the kind of self-aware nostalgia you’d expect from a brand that has spent a decade watching America’s collective mood swing from millennial gray to dopamine-inducing bright colors, to Grounded’s earthy, unbothered, restorative vibes.
How Is the Color of the Year Chosen?Behr and Home Depot’s color experts begin the process a full year in advance. “Step one is we book our flights, and we travel because it’s so important,” Kayla Kratz, Behr’s Head of Color, told SheKnows. “We do a ton of research that involves digital, but for us, what’s most important is to see color in the physical world. What are the colors, materials, and finishes that we’re seeing consistently across spaces? And that gives us the macro picture and perspective on where color directionally is going.”
“There are so many inputs,” Anna Miller, Director of Trend and Design at Home Depot, explained to SheKnows. “We’re trying to understand what’s going on in the world of interiors or exteriors, but also other consumer products and fashion. And so it’s taking in a lot of information that happens over time and then all of a sudden this through line emerges that when we start to see these real color trends that are repeated over and over again, and it starts to tell a story that we can really pull out, and develop the palette.”
Behr’s 2027 Color Trends PaletteGrounded anchors the full Behr 2027 Color Trends Palette, a lineup that spans warm neutrals, muted pinks, clay tones, and soft blues, alongside seven returning legacy shades — Coastal Beige, Wheat Grass, Environmental, Denim Light, Smokey Claret, Sarsaparilla, and Mozart. These colors are all built to layer with 2027’s headlines without competing for the spotlight.

You can find Grounded, along with the rest of the 2027 palette, exclusively at The Home Depot, in Behr Dynasty, Marquee, Ultra, and Premium Plus lines.
Whether or not a single wall color can talk you down from the edge of burnout is, admittedly, a big ask. But if any color is up to the job, it’s Grounded.
