I grew up in a small town in Wisconsin. The nearest grocery store, about a 10-minute drive from our house, closed in 2016. The store was a victim of asset consolidation during the merger of two area chains, Mega Foods and Gordy’s. After the closure, my dad declared half-jokingly that he now lived in a food desert; a few years later, he admitted that he’d basically been living off cans of Dinty Moore Beef Stew from the Chevron station a block away.
