WHAT were they saying Phil was wearing with his cum jeans? It sounded like he was sounding out “s-t-u-k” or “s-c-u-k” but regardless I’m lost on what that is.

@britishdisasters 1. I would assume he meant a tshirt with FCUK in big letters on the front, especially as he mentioned wearing it with the cum splat jeans. They were v.popular.
2. I can’t really remember why it stopped, I don’t think it immediately went out of fashion but I guess sales dropped a bit so they decided to pivot. It probably just became less shocking and more tacky, and they didn’t want to be seen as tacky. Phil would have been in 6th form (college) from 2003-2005, so it fits time-wise.
3. I should imagine dan knows what he’s on about, he’d have been 10-14 in that era so aware of what older kids are wearing, but probably not wearing it himself.
This was the era before social media and fast fashion, so I feel like trends lasted longer, and didn’t drop off a cliff quite so quickly. People probably still wore the items for years after they stopped being sold in shops, so seeing it around wouldn’t be weird.

Does that mean shirts with the logo on it? Other sorts of accessories? 2. If Phil is remembering this right. Wikipedia says they started using the branding in 1991 and stopped in 2005. (So when Phil was 18) I don’t know if that was due to declining popularity or due to public pressure. It seems like it peaked with edgy teens in like 2001-2003? And if they stopped in 2005 I just don’t know if that means I steep decline or a lot of social crackdown. But I guess Phil would have been talking about wearing it when, 2004? I’m just really unsure on the timing here. 5. Wikipedia says the brand is still colloquially known as fcuk, but I wonder how much of what Phil means by what he said fully translated to Dan? Given the time period of popularity and the subject, this seems like the sort of thing that would make the 4.5 year age difference actually matter for once. Dan didn’t have an older brother and he certainly wasn’t close with boys older than him, and went to a school where people wore uniforms. How much of what was popular for Phil was actually the same for Dan? Trends are not usually the same for people that different in age, not when you are a teenager. Not back then. So obviously Dan recognized the brand name, and knew what sort of jeans Phil was speaking of, but how much of the specific “wearing my fcuk” subculture context actually came across to Dan?
