CarPlay can make any vehicle feel significantly more comfortable and family. Still, the experience is not always perfect out of the box.

Some cars still require a wired connection, others lack CarPlay entirely, and what about keeping your iPhone charged and cooled on long trips?

Fortunately, improving those areas doesn’t require a big investment. These affordable accessories cover everything from wireless CarPlay and MagSafe charging to cable management and complete displays for older vehicles.

If your vehicle already supports wired CarPlay, the Carlinkit Mini Ultra 3 can eliminate the cable while retaining the car’s touchscreen, steering-wheel controls, built-in microphone, and original audio system.

The compact adapter includes USB-A and USB-C connections. After the initial pairing process, it automatically reconnects when you start the car. It also supports wireless Android Auto for Android 11 and newer, making it useful in a vehicle shared by iPhone and Android users.

One important note is that this adapter requires factory-installed wired CarPlay. It cannot add CarPlay to an unsupported vehicle.

For a car without CarPlay, a portable display is often the easiest upgrade. The Krunia 9.26-inch portable CarPlay screen costs $89.99 and adds wireless CarPlay without requiring you to remove the factory radio.

The screen supports Bluetooth, AUX, and FM audio connections, along with Siri, Android Auto, and over-the-air firmware updates. It also includes a backup camera, although installing that part requires running a cable to the rear of the vehicle.

This is a compelling middle ground for someone who wants CarPlay but does not want to replace the dashboard stereo.

A portable display will not suit every dashboard. For a cleaner permanent installation, the BOSS Audio BVCP9700A is a relatively affordable double-DIN receiver with a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and support for a backup camera.

The receiver is available for $164.99. However, buyers should check their vehicle before ordering. A dash kit, wiring harness, steering-wheel-control adapter, or professional installation could add to the total cost.

Not every route requires wireless charging. The standard ESR MagSafe car mount holds an iPhone on the dashboard or air vent without adding another charging cable.

It was available for $15.99 and includes metal rings for phones or cases without built-in magnetic support. This could also be the better option in hot climates, where charging can generate additional heat.

Many CarPlay problems come down to a worn out or poor fitting cable. The Anker Nano USB-A-to-USB-C CarPlay cable provides a braided data connection for newer USB-C iPhones and is available for $11.99.

Drivers with an iPhone 14 or older can use Anker’s PowerLine Flow USB-A-to-Lightning cable, which is available for $17.99.

The USB port that operates wired CarPlay often charges slowly. The Anker 323 car charger plugs into a 12V outlet and provides one USB-C port alongside one USB-A port.

At $14.99, it is an affordable way to charge a passenger’s phone or power another accessory without interfering with the vehicle’s CarPlay connection — or speed up your own charging with wireless CarPlay use.

A $6.99 package of adhesive cable clips can make a portable CarPlay display or wired phone mount look considerably more intentional. The clips can guide cables along the edge of the dashboard and keep them away from the shifter, pedals, and cup holders.

CarPlay doesn’t require a new vehicle or an elaborate stereo upgrade. Depending on what your car already supports, spending anywhere from $12 on a better cable to around $90 on a complete portable display can make the daily experience considerably more convenient.
