A kind woman in Missouri who helped people down on their luck was brutally beaten to death by a stranger in her own basement.

Melissa Anderson was found dead in her basement, covered in wounds to her head and torso, at her home in Sunset Hills on December 11, 2025.

The 64-year-old was known for lending a helping hand to anyone, whether it be by giving money or offering a ride, according to STL Today.

Anderson was killed by one of the people she showed her kindness to.

Joseph Marino, a 30-year-old clerk at a gas station Anderson frequented, drove to her home and beat her to death in the basement, said police.

Marino was arrested the day after the killing; officials said he had defensive wounds to his hands and ankles.

The cops said that evidence such as bloody clothes and shoes was found in a trash can at the victim's home.

Prosecutors said that most of the injuries were caused by blunt force before he then stomped on her head.

He pleaded guilty Monday in St. Louis County Circuit Court to second-degree murder and two counts of tampering with evidence.

The killer was sentenced to life in prison, as well as an additional four years for each of the tampering charges.

Marino declined to give any comment to the victim's family and only asked the judge about whether he would be eligible for parole if he accepted the plea deal.

Missouri state law requires 85 percent of the sentence to be served before becoming eligible for parole.

'Nobody in our office never gets used to hearing something like this,' said St. Louis County Prosecutor Melissa Price Smith.

'The victim, in this case, deserves to have a voice, and we will fight for justice for her.'

Prior to the case, Marino had a troubling history with the law, which included multiple DUIs and his involvement in a road rage accident that left a father shot.

In 2019, Marino and his brother were driving when they got into an altercation with another man who was his brother, then shot, according to Fox 2.

His brother was sent to prison on an assault conviction while he walked away on a probation deal.

Following the incident, he was then hit with three different DUIs in less than five years.

He was ordered to wear a court-ordered GPS ankle monitor, which prosecutors said he tampered with.

The laundry list of crimes was now unfortunately topped off by his guilty plea to Anderson's murder.

Her friends and family told a reporter that they were satisfied with the sentencing, according to STL Today. 

'That woman loved life,' her niece said. 'She was adventurous.'

Anderson's brother told the outlet that Marino had been threatening Anderson before the killing.

'He would talk pretty sketchy to scare her,' the brother said.

No motive has been found at the time of this report.

Marino told the court he had a history of mental health issues and suffered a nervous breakdown a month before the killing.

He said he was in a mental institution and took medication.
