How can methane emissions from dairy farming be effectively reduced, and what will drive the adoption of mitigation technologies in practice?

Reducing methane emissions from dairy farming is one of the key challenges on the road towards climate-neutral agriculture. Across Europe, agriculture contributes around 10–11% of total greenhouse gas emissions, with methane accounting for the largest share of agricultural emissions. In the dairy sector, most methane originates from enteric fermentation in cattle.

Unlike concentrated industrial emissions, methane released in dairy barns is highly diluted in large volumes of ventilation air, making conventional methane capture or combustion technologies technically and economically impractical. This creates a major technological challenge and an urgent need for innovative solutions.

The EU-funded projects CANMILK and REPAIR have addressed exactly this challenge. Their goal was to develop efficient, affordable, and scalable technologies that can significantly reduce methane emissions while remaining economically viable for farmers.

How can project results pave the way for practical methane mitigation solutions?
