Connecticut’s Nepali community is mourning the tragedy that struck Nepal this week.
On Wednesday, a wall of water, ice, mud, and debris slammed into villages along the border between Nepal and China.
Videos of the disaster showed people running before the floodwaters swallowed them up and washed out buildings and bridges. More than 390 people were killed, according to authorities in Nepal and China, and more than 1,400 were missing, including hundreds of foreigners and pilgrims. Hundreds of others have been displaced across the Himalayan region.
There are nearly 2,000 Nepali Americans in Connecticut. NBC Connecticut spoke to two restaurant owners who said they are doing everything they can to help Nepal and the people they know who are impacted.
“I wish I could be there yesterday. I wish I could be there to do what I can,” said Lincoln Everest, the vice president of the Nepalese Association of Connecticut. “It’s hurting, big time hurting… they’re losing families, they’re losing structures, they’re losing power plants, they’re losing all electricity.”
Everest said he has not gotten a hold of his family in Nepal yet, and is hoping they’re ok.
“Very very bad. It’s a very, very disastrous situation I think in our lifetime,” Everest said.
“This is the worst one I’ve ever seen because the valley is so narrow, and the flood ran too fast. People did not have much time to escape,” said Geljen Nuru Sherpa of Jewel of Himalaya, a Nepali restaurant in Newtown.
Sherpa said his family in Nepal is ok, but he’s hurting for everyone else.
“The people who are impacted, or victims, they are still our family. Nepal is a small country, and our culture is we care, and we share a lot,” Sherpa said.
The Newtown community has raised over $5,000 for Sherpa to give to those impacted in Nepal. He said it will be given directly to his loved ones in Kathmandu who will travel to the epicenter and distribute it.
“Beautiful families who have beautiful dreams and all of a sudden, it’s gone. I wish I could share with them, but I’m trying my best,” Sherpa said.
The president of the Nepalese Association of Connecticut is in Nepal right now. He’s safe, but Everest said they will be in touch with him about what needs to be done for help as well. He encourages anyone looking to help to reach out to the Nepalese Association of Connecticut.
