Two days ago, Costco did what it does best: it posted a vague tease about the return of a popular food court item and then sat back and watched the internet lose its mind. Theories were floated. Hopes were pinned. Pleas were made. Somewhere, a man in a Kirkland signature fleece refreshed the same Reddit thread nine times before lunch.
And then the answer came. According to employees who turned to Reddit to personally “confirm” the news, the mystery was solved. It’s churros. Reddit User TrippingOnGinger asked his Costco Food Court supervisor girlfriend, and she stated it would, in fact, be churros. More Costco employees jumped in to add additional confirmation. Rejoice! Except, you may want to sit down on a bulk-sized ottoman for this part; it’s the twisted churro. Not the original, straight, cinnamon baton that a generation of budget-conscious shoppers grew up on and have eaten in warehouse parking lots while reconsidering their life choices.
Members are not taking the news well. Many sobbing face emojis were shared. The complaint isn’t quite “we hate change.” It’s more “we asked for one thing, and you’ve given us its slightly inferior cousin instead.” The straight churro was never broken. It was the food court’s one uncomplicated pleasure. It was cheap, warm, sugary perfection. Nobody was clamoring for a twist. The original was the plot!
And then there’s the second faction, the people who aren’t mad about the twisted churro so much as they’re mad that the churro is not the combo pizza. This is where the real grief lives. These members did not want a dessert. They wanted their pizza back. They waited, they hoped, they refreshed the thread, and they were rewarded with a pastry in spiral form. It’s like ordering dinner and receiving a thoughtful note instead. They will be processing this for a while.
It’s worth remembering that the confirmation comes from employees on Reddit, not from Costco itself. Until the company says otherwise, we are all members of the same anxious congregation, clutching our $1.50 hot dog combos and hoping that the churro, whatever its shape, tastes like home.
