This electrically charged form of fluorine boasts powerful tooth-strengthening abilities.
Fluoride is an electrically charged form of the element fluorine.
An atom that carries such an overall charge is called an ion. Fluoride is a negative ion with a -1 charge. That’s because each fluoride ion contains nine (positively charged) protons and 10 (negatively charged) electrons.
Fluoride strengthens the enamel that makes up the outer layer of our teeth. That makes it an important component of toothpastes and other dental products. Many places also add fluoride to their drinking water. They don’t add much. The recommended level is just three drops of fluoride per 200 liters of water. But even that amount can reduce dental cavities by about 25 percent. That’s according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
In 1945, Grand Rapids, Mich., became the first city to add fluoride to its water. By 2015, about three-quarters of Americans had access to tap water that strengthens teeth. The CDC lists fluoride-treated water as one of the 10 great public health achievements of the 20th century.
Fluoride strengthens enamel thanks to its excellent ability to snag positively charged particles. Compared to other atoms or ions, a fluoride particle is tiny. That means all its negative charge is packed into a small area. In other words, fluoride comes with high charge density. And that allows it to form strong bonds with other particles.
Fluoride binds and holds onto positively charged particles, such as calcium ions. In our mouths, this process forms calcium-based minerals that reinforce enamel. That provides a barrier against acids that would dissolve our teeth.
In a sentenceWhen fluoride-amended water treatments drop, dental problems rise.
atom: The basic unit of a chemical element. Atoms are made up of a dense nucleus that contains positively charged protons and uncharged neutrons. The nucleus is orbited by a cloud of negatively charged electrons.
bond: (in chemistry) A semi-permanent attachment between atoms — or groups of atoms — in a molecule. It’s formed by an attractive force between the participating atoms. Once bonded, the atoms will work as a unit. To separate the component atoms, energy must be supplied to the molecule as heat or some other type of radiation.
calcium: A chemical element and alkali metal common in minerals of the Earth’s crust and in sea salt. It is also found in bone mineral and teeth, and can play a role in the movement of certain substances into and out of cells.
component: Something that is part of something else (such as pieces that go on an electronic circuit board or ingredients that go into a cookie recipe).
density: The measure of how condensed some object is, found by dividing its mass by its volume.
dental: (adj.) Meaning related to teeth.
dissolve: To turn a solid into a liquid and disperse it into that starting liquid. (For instance, sugar or salt crystals, which are solids, will dissolve into water. Now the crystals are gone and the solution is a fully dispersed mix of the liquid form of the sugar or salt in water.)
electron: A negatively charged particle, usually found orbiting the outer regions of an atom; also, the carrier of electricity within solids.
element: A building block of some larger structure. (in chemistry) Each of more than one hundred substances for which the smallest unit of each is a single atom. Examples include hydrogen, oxygen, carbon, lithium and uranium.
enamel: The glossy, hard substance that covers a tooth.
fluoride: A chemical, such as sodium fluoride, that contains the element fluorine. In small doses, fluorides can help prevent tooth decay.
fluorine: An element first discovered in 1886 by Henri Moissan. It takes its name from the Latin word meaning “to flow.” Very reactive, chemically, this element had little commercial use until World War II, when it was used to help make a nuclear-reactor fuel. Later, it was used as ingredients (fluorocarbons) in refrigerants and aerosol propellants. Most recently, it has found widespread use to make nonstick coatings for frying pans, plumbers’ tape, and waterproof clothing.
ion: (adj. ionized) An atom or molecule with an electric charge due to the loss or gain of one or more electrons. An ionized gas, or plasma, is where all of the electrons have been separated from their parent atoms.
mineral: Crystal-forming substances that make up rock, such as quartz, apatite or various carbonates. Most rocks contain several different minerals mish-mashed together. A mineral usually is solid and stable at room temperatures and has a specific formula, or recipe (with atoms occurring in certain proportions) and a specific crystalline structure (meaning that its atoms are organized in regular three-dimensional patterns). (in physiology) The same chemicals that are needed by the body to make and feed tissues to maintain health.
particle: A minute amount of something.
proton: A subatomic particle that is one of the basic building blocks of the atoms that make up matter. Protons belong to the family of particles known as hadrons.
