International experts assessed the compliance of the Akademik Lomonosov floating power unit in Pevek with global best practices
A scheduled peer review by experts from the Moscow Center of the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO MC) has concluded at the floating nuclear thermal power plant (FNPP, a branch of the Rosenergoatom Concern, which is part of the Rosatom Electric Power Division).

Over a two-week period, 13 international experts assessed the Akademik Lomonosov, a unique floating power unit in Pevek, for compliance with global best practices. Additionally, a peer review featuring a representative from the People's Republic of China was conducted at the FNPP's stand-alone subdivision in Saint Petersburg.

During the visit, the experts observed the performance of operations personnel and examined technical documentation. The international team focused on such critical areas as the organization and administration, maintenance and repairs, engineering support, radiation protection, operating experience, emergency preparedness, and other fields. The review identified fewer areas for improvement (AFIs) than the 2022 assessment.

"These findings rank the FNPP on par with Russia's top nuclear power plants, including the Balakovo and Kalinin NPPs. They highlight the exceptional expertise of the plant's management and team, who maintain safety and operational standards in line with both Russian and global best practices. This success was driven by the daily, meticulous efforts of all FNPP managers and employees to improve production performance," said Viktor Yelagin, Director of the FNPP.

For reference:

World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) is a respected international non-profit organization established in 1989. Its primary mission is to maximize the safety and reliability of nuclear power plants worldwide. The Association brings together more than 120 companies operating around 440 commercial nuclear reactors across dozens of countries. WANO is not a regulatory body; it operates on the principles of voluntary participation, mutual trust, and confidentiality. By sharing experiences, identifying and replicating best practices, nuclear power plants worldwide are breaking down operational silos. Instead of working in isolation, they continuously learn from one another to prevent incidents and strengthen their safety culture.

Safety stands as a top priority for Rosatom and its enterprises. The company is deeeply focused on advancing its safety culture, deploying modern occupational health practices, preventing workplace injuries, and leveraging digital technologies. Rosatom's Electric Power Division plays an active role in driving these initiatives forward.
