There’s an episode in the first season of “Adults” where Owen Thiele’s character Anton is accused by his friends of being a “friend slut” — he’s charmed too many people, to the point of befriending a suspected stabber. The scene comes to mind pretty quickly upon chatting with Thiele, who is quickly becoming one of the most in-demand young actors today.

“I think that’s the thing we share the most, is we are friend sluts,” Thiele says, over Zoom in a hotel robe the morning after the “Adults” Season 2 premiere. “But also I just want to defend myself for one second here: I wouldn’t invite a stabber into my house. I wouldn’t do that,” he clarifies, before pausing to consider it some more. “Well…yeah, if I was next to them at a bar, maybe…”

Thiele can’t help it: at 5 years old he was going up to strangers and asking their names, and now at 29, “every set I go onto, I make a best friend.” 

“I like meeting new people,” he confesses. “I’ve always been that way.”

It’s working out well so far for the actor. Following breakouts in “I Think You Should Leave,” “Theater Camp” and “Overcompensating,” Thiele stars in “Adults,” the FX sitcom about a group of twentysomethings sharing a friend’s childhood home in Queens. 

Season 2, which is out now, finds Anton having to face his feelings for friend/housemate/green card husband Paul Baker, as well as his relationship with his sister, played by Raven Simone.

“I feel like the writers and the creators, Ben and Rebecca, integrated a little part of Owen into the first season, which was really fun because I felt like, yes, I got to play a character, but also I got to bring parts of myself to the role,” Thiele says. “And then this season, Anton is struggling more with his vulnerability, which I don’t do in real life.” 

In real life, Thiele is a natural at vulnerability: in addition to acting he also hosts a podcast called “In Your Dreams,” where he is joined, curled up in bed, by guests like Kendall Jenner, Connor Storrie and Kristen Stewart. 

“My goal of my podcast when I’m interviewing people is that they feel comfortable and that they feel comfortable enough to say things and share things that maybe the public wants to know, but they’ve never felt safe enough to say,” he says. “And so I hope on set that I’m a collaborative and comfortable scene partner where [‘Adults’ costars] Amita [Rao] or Jack [Innanen] or whoever in the show can react off of me and we can find a new scene within the scene.”

Thiele has loved the spotlight ever since he can remember. Adopted at birth, he grew up in Beverly Hills with parents Bob Thiele Jr., the music producer, and Amy Kanter, who made Thiele aware of the difficulties of Hollywood but encouraged him full speed ahead.

“I always liked cameras in my face. I would always beg my mom to take photos of me, take videos of me,” Thiele says. “I was dancing on tables as a kid, and my mom and dad were not the parents to be like, ‘OK, get down.’ They were like, ‘No, no, no, it’s just five more minutes. He missed that spin, so he’s going to have to do it again.’ Paying the waiter to be like, ‘Thank you, just give us 10.’ For as long as I can remember, I’ve always wanted to be an actor.”

In the midst of filming “Adults” and “Overcompenstating,” Thiele also worked on upcoming movies “Peaked,” directed by his friend Molly Gordon, and the “13 Going on 30” reboot. He’s intrigued by trying something outside of comedy next, something like “a biopic of someone from the ’70s where my lingo that I use now wouldn’t even fit” — or an Avatar. 

“I’m still in the stage in my career where I really want things really badly, which is actually so fun, and I hope I never outgrow that,” Thiele says. “I probably never will.”
