England's World Cup campaign officially started with a bang as they were treated to a thunderous performance by local drummers at their team welcome ceremony.

The event was staged in the Miyazaki Prefecture Government Hall, where the Red Rose squad were introduced to local dignitaries after enjoying the energetic show laid on for them.

World Rugby chairman and former England captain Bill Beaumont presented the players with their caps and Maro Itoje briefly addressed the small audience in Japanese, as part of a thank you speech.

Ben Youngs was presented with the gift of a devilish red 'Tengu' mask – which was given as a lucky charm, as they are said to scare off evil spirits.

Billy Vunipola was called on to the stage to help decorate an elaborate 'Daruma doll' modelled on a monk credited with founding Zen Buddhism.

Each of the teams competing at this World Cup are receiving their own, individually-crafted doll as an unusual memento.

The younger of the Vunipola brothers was asked to make a wish after demonstrating his artwork. He said: 'I wish that whatever we do in the next few weeks will live with us for the rest of our lives.'

Now they have arrived, England will play their first tournament match against Tonga on Sunday

There were various sincere wishes from the hosts that what England do in the coming weeks is leave here well prepared and go on to win the tournament. There is much local pride that these visitors have come here for a final training camp.

Speaking after the ceremony, Itoje said: 'It's going to be an awesome World Cup and I can't wait to get started. You can tell the whole squad feels together and that we're building towards something. We feel as if we've grown tighter and more cohesive. The feeling is good.'

England's opening fixture is against Tonga in Sapporo on Sunday and referenced the Vunipolas when he added: 'We have two boys of Tongan heritage in our team. I've seen what those two have done to people! It can be dangerous, if you allow it to be.

'We know that they're an incredibly physical side. They have big boys who are physical and aggressive. They have huge athleticism as well and we know how much Tonga as a country love rugby. They'll definitely be up for it. I'm sure it will be a great game.'

Each player in the squad was handed a World Cup cap in person by Beaumont
