The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme manages the International UN Volunteer Program, which gives people the opportunity to use their skills to support peace and development around the world. International UN Volunteers work with United Nations agencies, local partners, and communities in different countries. They contribute to humanitarian work, development projects, peacebuilding, public services, and other initiatives that help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The International UN Volunteer Program 2026 allows qualified people to volunteer in a country other than their own. It is a great opportunity to make a positive impact while gaining valuable international experience. Volunteers work with people from different cultures, develop new skills, expand their professional network, and support communities facing social, economic, or humanitarian challenges.

The UN Volunteer Abroad Program offers assignments for people from different professional backgrounds and experience levels. From 1 April 2026, UNV will use four experience-based categories, and applicants may serve between 1 and 48 months. Opportunities are published throughout the year on the Unified Volunteering Platform, and candidates must first create a profile in the UNV Global Talent Pool before applying.

If you are planning to become an International UN Volunteer, this guide will help you understand the application process, eligibility criteria, volunteer categories, benefits, and profiles in demand. You can also read our complete UN Volunteer Guide for more tips on preparing a strong application.
