This weekend is your opportunity to skip the state’s 6.25% sales tax, which will be suspended for most retail items priced under $2,500 on Saturday and Sunday. That’s per the state Legislature.

This is not related to the botched proposed cut to the state’s income tax rate from 5% to 4% that was kicked off the fall ballot due to a summary error by AG Andrea Campbell’s office. Campbell said she got other ballot questions correct, so she’s claiming batting .500 is pretty good. But we’re not playing baseball. We digress.

As for the tax-free respite, each item you buy falls under the tax-free status if they are less than the $2,500 cap, even if your total bill exceeds $2,500. This includes online shopping purchases paid in full during both qualifying days.

This law, passed in 2018, is designed to help local businesses. So shop local and help a neighbor out. Or, just grab a break from taxes and inflation.

Small hotels, restaurants, and bars scored a meaningful boost from visiting World Cup fans last month, a Bank of America survey found.

The “On the Ball” report reports spending in host cities rose around 5% year-over-year, with the strongest gains coming from non-locals, whose spending was up more than 17%. Restaurants and bars were the clearest beneficiaries.

This was especially true for hotels in Boston, a host city.
