E-commerce giant slashes at least 100 corporate jobs in robotics unit, following more than 57,000 white-collar layoffs since 2022
Amazon has cut jobs in its robotics division, in the latest cuts following massive corporate reductions in October and January that affected tens of thousands.
At least 100 corporate roles are affected, Reuters reported, citing unnamed people.
Announced in an email on Tuesday by Amazon robotics vice president Scott Dresser, the cuts indicate Amazon is continuing to reduce staff after eliminating more than 57,000 corporate roles in successive rounds of cuts since late 2022.
Amazon confirmed the job cuts, which were earlier reported by Business Insider, saying it had eliminated a “relatively small number of robotics roles” this week, without providing a number.
It said it “regularly” reviews its organisations.
The latest round of cuts in January affected about 16,000 people, following cuts affecting about 14,000 white-collar staff in October.
Flattened structureAmazon went on a massive hiring spree during the Covid-19 pandemic to deal with spiralling demand for e-commerce and cloud services, but has recently been trying to strip away layers of management.
The company uses robots in its warehouses to assist with operations, but in January halted the development of the Blue Jay multi-armed robot that it had demonstrated in October.
At the same time, Amazon is laying out $200bn on capital expenditures this year, as it expands its AI infrastructure, and also invested $50bn in OpenAI in a funding round announced last week.
