Greggs has done the unthinkable. It’s taken one of Britain’s most iconic snacks and given it a fresh twist.
The high street bakery has officially launched a chicken sausage roll, completing what it’s calling a “trilogy” alongside its classic pork version and the hugely popular vegan alternative.
And while it might sound like just another menu update, this one is already getting people talking.
What’s actually new?
The new roll features seasoned chicken wrapped in Greggs’ signature golden, flaky pastry, designed to feel familiar but just different enough to tempt regulars.
It lands in shops this week, priced at £1.35, and comes in at 305 calories, making it slightly lighter than the traditional pork version.
Hardcore fans even had the chance to try it early at a London pop-up, where customers had to turn up in groups of three – a nod to the new three-roll line-up.
Why launch the new chicken roll now?
Greggs, like many big food brands, is adapting to shifting habits. People are thinking more about what they eat, trying new options, or simply looking for something different without spending more.
Last month, the Newcastle-based bakery firm reported that statutory pre-tax profits fell by 17.9% to £167.4 million for the year to December 27, compared with a year earlier.
It also told shareholders that total sales grew by 6.8% to £2.15 billion over the year, with like-for-like growth buoyed by its continued store opening programme.
And with rising costs and tighter budgets, the new chicken roll priced at £1.35 Greggs is aiming to place the product in the “everyday treat” territory.
A Greggs spokeswoman said: “They say the best things come in threes, and our iconic roll trilogy is no exception. We can’t wait for our customers to experience the Chicken Roll as the ultimate headline act of our flaky franchise.”
As always with Greggs, opinion is split.
“Curious to try it! Greggs always surprises,” said one Reddit user reacting to the new product announcement. While another user said: “Chicken version? Cool, but get more vegan options next please.”
