Julius Pechman, who had a long tenure on Cameron Hill, was born in Saxony, Germany, on March 11, 1841. The name was spelled with two 'n's in the Old Country, but was shortened in the U.S. Julius served in the Franco-German War before going to America. The Pechmans were in Washington, D.C., for a short time before making their way to Chattanooga about 1870.

Julius Pechman, who "was known for his rugged honesty," married Pauline Keonig. A brother, Ernest Pechman, lived in Chicago. There were two sisters "in the Fatherland."

At the time of the first Chattanooga city directory, Julius Pechman was a bootmaker living at Fourth and Railroad Avenue (Broad Street). By 1876, he was still a bootmaker, but was living on Cross Street, between Evans and Fulton. All those old street names were replaced.

He was in town for the dreadful Yellow Fever and served on the Relief Committee. It was said that he "did excellent work" in helping with the fever victims. He became ill himself and almost died.

Julius Pechman was one of the city's first mail carriers and at one time was their supervisor. He operated a shoe manufacturing shop for many years. He was in business with Bernard Windorf in Pechman & Windorf that at one time had its shop near the bottom of West Sixth Street.

The Pechmans were a tight knit family, often residing together at various Cameron Hill locations. Son Albert was a locksmith and gunsmith and another son, Herman, was a plumber. All three lived at 51 Pleasant St. high above the city. Afterward, Julius and Albert were at 208 Arcadia, and Herman was next door at 210 Arcadia. Arcadia Avenue was just below Boynton Park.

The Pechman daughter, Martha Marie, married a nearby Cameron Hill resident, Thomas Avery Rogers. The wedding was July 9, 1880.

When Julius Pechman died in April of 1913, Dr. Jonathan Bachman, the revered First Presbyterian pastor, came to the Arcadia home to perform the service. Pauline Pechman lived until 1928 when she was 86. At the time she was residing at 503 Boynton Terrace with the Rogers family. It was said she had lived on the Westside the entire time she was in Chattanooga. She was "a devout Christian known for having a large circle of friends among the older citizens." The funeral was at the Rogers residence, conducted by Dr. Robert M. Stimson, pastor of Second Presbyterian Church.

Albert Pechman as a young man was a star baseball player. His position was first base. He had a well-known shop on Cherry Street for his locksmith and gunsmith work for four decades.

Albert Pechman and his wife, Georgia, had a daughter, Mrs. John L. Malone.

Albert Pechman had told others that when he died he would prefer that it be at his work bench. And so he did at the beloved Cherry Street workshop when he was 72 in 1950.

Herman Pechman married Vernice Howard in 1902. A daughter, Margaret Louise, married Paul D. Thatcher on November 26, 1923, on Cameron Hill at her parents' home. Dr. Edgar Alonzo Elmore of the Second Presbyterian Church presided. Dr. Elmore was at Second Presbyterian for 27 years and was said to be the dean of Chattanooga's ministers. Mrs. O.P. Darwin was at the piano. Paul Thatcher was the son of Mr. and Mrs. J.D. Thatcher of Highland Park. Paul Thatcher was working at the Price-Evans Foundry. For the service, an improvised altar was arranged in the sun parlor of the home. Margaret Pechman had attended Chattanooga High School and was said to be very popular.

Another daughter, Virginia Ethel Pechman, was the maid of honor at her sister's wedding. She lived until 1987.

Herman Pechman was living at 3204 Dayton Blvd. when he died in 1955 at age 74. It was said that he had worked out of the Cherry Street shop for 53 years.
