Motorola and the GrapheneOS project first announced their collaboration at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2026, and now, release timeline has been updated. On Mastodon, the team confirmed last week that the first Motorola smartphones with official GrapheneOS support are expected to become available in 2027.

According to GrapheneOS, the initial rollout will support only the flagship models as these devices feature higher-end hardware specifications, better security features, and better driver support. It is not yet clear if 2027 and late-2026 releases will be the only ones to get Motorola-endorsed GrapheneOS builds as there is no finalized list of supported products; it could be that older flagship models such as the Razr Ultra will, too. It is not entirely clear whether and how users wishing to switch from stock Android to Graphene, or vice versa will be able to do that. It makes sense to assume that the upcoming Motos will still ship with mostly stock Android by default, with GrapheneOS ROMs available for easy installation as an option to replace the default OS. Factory-configured dual boot sounds like an option, too.

Lower-end Motorola devices will not receive support at launch and will take more time to receive their Graphene builds as the budget and mid-range chipsets currently lack the same level of hardware security and long-term update support. This is reportedly due to how Qualcomm handles its lower-tier hardware. In addition, GrapheneOS noted that Motorola will need to start paying Qualcomm for longer update support on devices below the flagship level.

Presumably, models with SoCs from other chipmakers - mostly, Mediatek - will be left out of the deal.

On the technical side, the GrapheneOS team is preparing its infrastructure by hosting all Android Open Source Project (AOSP) Git repositories on its own servers. This setup will allow the developers to prepare builds ahead of time and push code directly to their own repositories, ensuring seamless support for major Android updates as soon as they launch.
