Nitecore has introduced the NWE10, an acoustic signaling device designed for emergencies as well as everyday use while hiking. Its various modes are intended to help locate an individual or group. According to Nitecore, the 1.3 oz device emits a 126 dB acoustic signal in an emergency. The sound is intended both to deter certain animals and help rescuers locate the user. Nitecore claims a battery life of up to 80 hours in SOS mode, with the signal sounding every three minutes. The device is also IPX7-rated and emits the acoustic signal at 3,300 Hz.

Similar to the just released Summit Air power bank, its battery remains operational in extremely cold conditions, down to -40°F. Nitecore does not specify whether or to what extent the capacity is reduced at low temperatures. By comparison, the Summit Air retains 80 percent of its capacity at -4°F and 60 percent at its minimum operating temperature. If necessary, the signaling device can be connected to a power bank via USB-C and continue operating while charging. This naturally requires the user to remain conscious or react quickly enough. Nitecore recommends charging the NWE10 every six months if it is not used for an extended period.

The device also offers a beacon mode. This likewise emits a signal at 3,300 Hz and apparently at the same 126 dB volume. According to the manual, it is activated from SOS mode, although the differences between the two modes are unclear. Beacon mode also provides up to 80 hours of battery life. A brief press can also produce a short acoustic signal without activating a continuous mode.

The NWE10 is already in stock at some retailers and is available in four colors. These include orange, an important option for outdoor visibility, as well as less conspicuous black, white and green variants. It costs around $20.
