CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Flood victims in Kanawha County continue their clean-up nearly a week after a pair of storms rolled through and caused damage from one end of the county to the other.

C.W. Sigman

Kanawha County Emergency Manager C.W. Sigman said collection of flood debris across the unincorporated areas of Kanawha County begins Monday. Sigman stressed it is a pickup for flood debris only.

“This is not a cleanup for stuff that’s been laying around the house for years, this is for flood debris. Old stuff you don’t want lying around the house mildewing and rotting,” he said.

Pickup times for Cross Lanes, Rutledge Road, Campbells Creek and Cabin Creek are posted on the Kanawha County Commission and Kanawha County Emergency Services social media sites.

Sigman said where the flood of 2016 hit hard in the area between Clendenin and Elkview, and other floods hit the eastern side of the county, this particular storm was different.

“This one came in the west and came out the east and left a trail of destruction from one end to the other, not everybody, but destruction in a lot of places in that path,” he explained.

The level of destruction isn’t completely known. Victims are still being encouraged to fill out the flood surveys with the state. Those documents will help as the state compiles damage estimates and seeks federal disaster assistance for the county. Sigman said they’ve had a good response so far.

“We even have people who are helping us out to say they had flooding, but it wasn’t significant and others who have had some very significant damage, but we’ve had a good response on that,” he said.

Unlike other floods, when you travel through the hollows where the water left the creek bank, the damaged homes are spotty. Sigman said that’s the result of a lot of painful mitigation work in past flooding events.

“It’s hit and miss. You start driving up these areas if you pay attention, you’ll see a lot of people over many years have moved their homes back away from the creek and have elevated their homes. It’s improved some,” he said.

Sigman noted the flooding within the Charleston city limits is among the worst he’d ever seen. City crews continue to work to help victims get their homes cleaned out and prepared for repairs.
