Disney has announced a partnership with TikTok that will officially authorise content creators to use film and television clips from across Disney’s vast empire – including Star Wars, Marvel and Pixar – in their short-form videos.

Initially launching as a US pilot program before a planned international rollout, the agreement bridges Hollywood with the creator economy.

Under the initiative, a select group of creators will gain access to a curated library of official footage, while a joint venture will highlight top-performing content and invite creators to exclusive events.

Selected videos may also cross-pollinate onto Disney’s recently launched short-form video platform, Verts.

The collaboration follows the collapse of Disney’s previous $1bn partnership with OpenAI, which fell through after the tech firm shuttered its Sora AI video-generation tool.

Industry experts claim that the TikTok agreement repositions Disney in the user-generated content space, recognising that attention has shifted toward digital influencers.

What does it mean for consumers?

For everyday users and fans, the deal signals a potentia shift in how they interact with their favourite entertainment brands:

  • End of Copyright Takedowns: Fans have long posted film-related videos, frequently risking sudden removal due to copyright claims. This partnership legitimises fan expression, allowing audiences to build creative edits, tributes and memes using official clips without fear of censorship.

  • New pathways to stardom: Outstanding user-generated videos could receive algorithmic boosts or even be showcased directly on Disney’s platforms, bridging the gap between grassroots fandom and official studio distribution.

  • Risk-Managed content experience: Because platforms like TikTok face strict regulatory scrutiny and safety debates, Disney plans to enforce robust curation guardrails on the creator content selected, ensuring the ecosystem remains family-friendly.
