While comic-book movies have grown even more polarizing, superhero television has been entering a sort of golden age with shows like Invincible, Daredevil: Born Again, and The Boys. Underdiscussed in this conversation is the animated series Batman: Caped Crusader. A Prime Video original developed by the prolific Bruce Timm (Batman: The Animated Series), as well as producers Matt Reeves and J.J. Abrams, the show serves as a more mature spiritual successor. The first season, which aired in 2024, may not have reached the heights of BTAS, but still proved to be a steadily smart, moody reconfiguration of The Dark Knight throughout its run.

Batman: Caped Crusader Season 2 doesn’t try to break the mold; it continues to deliver on the first season’s stylish noir storytelling. Fans pick up right where the first season left off. Set in a noir-inspired time period that hews close to the 1940s, the streets of Gotham are being kept in an iron grip by crime boss Rupert Thorne (Cedric Yarbrough) and his ruthless enforcer Edward “The Riddler” Nygma (Ronan Raftery). The only thing standing in their way is billionaire playboy Bruce Wayne (Hamish Linklater), who moonlights as the vigilante “The Batman.” Working closely with Police Commissioner Gordon (Eric Morgan Stuart) and his daughter Barbara (Krystal Joy Brown), the caped crusader fights through an array of dangerous rogues.

Courtesy of Warner Bros. Animation, the visual design of Batman: Caped Crusader continues to be quite impressive. While not as expressionist as Batman: The Animated Series, Caped Crusader maintains a defined noir aesthetic that feels lived-in. The character designs are particularly noteworthy in their remixing of classic elements for this grounded, noir world. A personal favorite design, the dead-eyed, muted green and yellow-colored take on Harley Quinn (Jamie Chung) makes a return. Additionally, new iterations of familiar characters like Jim Corrigan/The Spectre taking on a zombie-like visage, The Mad Hatter as a talk show host, and The Scarecrow brandishing a distinct plague doctor mask provide a wildly refreshing look into Batman’s rogues gallery.

The new additions that will likely stand out, both for their designs and updated characterizations, are The Riddler and The Joker. Edward Nygma being reinterpreted as a classic psychotic gangster may seem like sacrilege, yet it oozes so much style from his eye-popping green outfit, purple glasses, and Ronan Raftery’s cackling voice performance. Making his “riddling” a more bullet-involved activity rather than a test of wits is a nice touch.

For The Joker, Batman: Caped Crusader goes all the way back to Batman Issue #1 to craft a terrifying take. A pronounced hat covers the iconic villain in shadow as he speaks in a monotone, droll voice full of wicked purpose provided by House of the Dragon‘s Matthew Needham before administering shocking acts of violence. His scowl, replacing the iconic grin audiences have become accustomed to, can send shivers down the spine. As it turns out, the easiest way to make a character feel fresh again can sometimes be to go back to their very first appearance.

Hamish Linklater Continues to Lead a Brilliant Voice Cast

Really, the entire voice cast is on their A-game here, with Hamish Linklater (Midnight Mass) being the obvious standout. The way Batman: Caped Crusader uses Bruce Wayne/Batman is highly unusual in the sense that he’s more of an investigative entry point into the whodunit-dependent narratives told throughout the show. He never overstays his welcome, making his way through cases as viewers see the narrative build in his periphery. Linklater is the perfect man to voice this subtler Batman, whose accosting of criminals and playing the part of fun-loving rich kid are entirely convincing in equal measure. He commits absolutely without trying to upstage the noir world of the series.

The actual stories being told in Batman: Caped Crusader Season 2 are mostly great, although the show’s structure, as with the first, leaves a little something to be desired. More specifically, the serialized elements of Batman: Caped Crusader Season 2 work a lot better than the episodic ones. When the writer’s room, led by head writer Geoffrey Thorne, builds out the interconnected supporting cast including the Gordons, Renee Montoya (Michelle C. Bonilla), the psychopathic reign of The Riddler, and The Joker’s encroaching influence, Caped Crusader Season 2 plays like a gripping, slow-burn crime drama. That dynamite dynamic can feel halted whenever Caped Crusader slows down for an episodic adventure.

Episodic vs. Serialized Storytelling in Caped Crusader Season 2

There are some episodes that stand out in all the best ways. One terrific episode brings the focus onto maybe-future-Robin Carrie Kelly, another one about Roxy Rocket (voiced by Sinners star Wunmi Mosaku, no less), and the aforementioned Scarecrow installment. Other episodes simply feel like they are just killing time, however. Most of these flaccid entries involve supernatural elements that clash with the overall world and vibe that Batman: Caped Crusader is trying to flesh out. This is a running issue from the first season, where Caped Crusader establishes its own grounded noir universe yet still wants to encapsulate some of the fantastical elements of the Batman mythos.

Batman: Caped Crusader Season 2 is solid work from Bruce Timm and head writer Geoffrey Thorne. The season maintains the ethos of shaking up Batman’s role as a crimefighter in a stylized noir universe, telling good stories animated and voice-acted with the utmost dedication. In the modern television landscape, it’s easy for animated shows to get lost in the shuffle. By sticking with what worked in the first season, Batman: Caped Crusader Season 2 proves that there is plenty of room for a series like this to thrive, though.
