Michael J. Fox is one of Hollywood's most beloved icons, having won over audiences with his boyish charisma, boundless energy, and perfectly precise comedic timing. He first rose to prominence on the NBC sitcom Family Ties, but quickly transitioned to the big screen, where he solidified his leading man status playing Marty McFly in the Back to the Future trilogy. However, after starring in hit comedies like Teen Wolf and The Secret of My Success, he decided to step out of his comfort zone and into the ghost realm to explore much darker, more complex territory. This artistic pivot led him directly into a collaboration with director Peter Jackson – one that initially struggled to find its audience, but later developed a massive cult following.

Starring as Frank Bannister in the 1996 film The Frighteners, Fox traded his signature charm for the cynical edge of a desperate conman, who, after a near-death experience, befriends a group of eccentric spirits and hatches a plan for the ghosts to haunt local homes, so he can charge a premium to get rid of them – until a series of mysterious deaths points to a far darker force. The film pushed the boundaries of both visual effects and traditional horror-comedies, offering a wildly original ride that caught moviegoers completely by surprise.

"Once an architect, Frank Bannister (Michael J. Fox) now passes himself off as an exorcist of evil spirits. To bolster his facade, he claims his 'special' gift is the result of a car accident that killed his wife. But what he does not count on is more people dying in the small town where he lives. As he tries to piece together the supernatural mystery of these killings, he falls in love with the wife (Trini Alvarado) of one of the victims and deals with a crazy FBI agent (Jeffrey Combs)."

The Frighteners faced a notoriously difficult uphill battle at the box office. Not only was it released as a summer blockbuster, going up against colossal juggernauts like Independence Day and other major tentpoles, but it also received an R rating from the MPAA for terror and violence, which significantly limited its audience potential. The horror-comedy grossed roughly $29 million worldwide against a production budget of about $26 million, failing to turn a profit for Universal Pictures once marketing costs were factored in.

The film earned a much warmer reception from critics, who appreciated its inventive spirit and exuberant direction, resulting in a 65% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences also grew to love its macabre sense of humor, but it happened more slowly, with the movie only truly finding its redemption on the home video market after its initial release. Driven by passionate word of mouth, The Frighteners eventually built a substantial cult following, elevating its status to a beloved classic that continues to be celebrated today.

Its enduring popularity ultimately paved the way for a new release, which will be arriving just in time for Halloween. Arrow Video has announced a new Limited Edition 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray of The Frighteners, featuring both the original theatrical cut (110 mins) and the expanded director's cut (123 mins) of the film, presented with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos audio. The discs also boast a bevy of bonus features, including The Making of The Frighteners, an audio commentary track by Jackson, and more – as listed below.
