Hantavirus is a rodent-borne virus that spreads to humans through infected rats and mice. The World Health Organization estimates that 10,000 to 100,000 cases occur globally every year. Some strains cause mild illness, while others can lead to severe lung and kidney complications.

People usually get infected after coming into contact with rodent urine, saliva or droppings. The virus can become airborne while cleaning contaminated spaces or touching infected surfaces. In rare cases, infection may also occur through rodent bites or scratches.

Three deaths linked to Hantavirus were reported on the luxury cruise ship MV Hondius travelling between Argentina and Cape Verde. The WHO confirmed that the suspected strain is Andes Hantavirus, the only known variant capable of limited human-to-human transmission through close contact.

Symptoms can appear one to eight weeks after exposure and often begin with fever, headache, muscle pain, nausea and stomach problems. Severe infections can quickly progress to breathing difficulties, fluid buildup in the lungs and heart complications.

In the Americas, Hantavirus can cause Hantavirus Cardiopulmonary Syndrome (HCPS), which affects the lungs and heart. According to the WHO, fatality rates for severe cases can range from 20% to 50%, making it a major public health concern.

There is currently no specific cure or vaccine for Hantavirus infection. Doctors mainly provide supportive treatment such as oxygen therapy, fluids, rest and ventilator support for critically ill patients. Early hospital care can improve survival chances.

Health experts advise people to avoid contact with rodents and keep homes and storage areas clean. Wearing protective gear while cleaning rodent-infested places can reduce the risk of inhaling contaminated dust. Quick diagnosis and contact tracing also help limit outbreaks.
