Marketing teams love their AI, and who can blame them? Marketers report some of the highest AI impact of any professional function. Eighty-six percent say AI helps them feel more accomplished, and 88% say it makes ambiguous, difficult work easier to start, exactly the kind of work that fills a marketer’s day. By that measure, AI is doing exactly what it promised.
But the same data that shows marketers benefiting from AI also shows them having to clean up after it the most. Seventy-three percent of marketers say AI creates extra work to review or fix. That is a staggering 13 points higher than the broader workforce. AI is helping marketers produce more, but it’s also draining their energy to wrangle all that extra output. Output keeps climbing, but impact hasn’t followed—and the data from our latest report shows exactly why.
Why does more AI output not lead to more marketing impact?More AI output doesn’t lead to greater impact because the work gets scattered across more tools, and every handoff between them is a place where context can get lost. A single campaign can span briefs, creative tools, analytics dashboards, and half a dozen channels—and now AI touches most of them.
This creates the gap between output and impact. AI can generate a draft, a headline, or an analysis, but if it can’t carry the context of the brand, the campaign, or the last version forward on its own, It just creates more work for the marketer.
The data shows how much this is already costing marketers. In addition to the nearly three-fourths of marketers who report that AI creates extra work to review or fix, 83% say that AI adds more options than clarity. Sixty percent say their tools feel fragmented rather than connected, and 55% have missed deadlines or made mistakes because they got tangled up in their tools.
Each one of those statistics represents time and energy pulled away from the work marketers were actually hired to do.
AI improves marketing work—not just by producing more of it—when three things are true: It lives where marketers already work, it’s grounded in the brand and its data, and it carries context across the entire workflow:
Get all three right, and AI stops adding to the pile and starts clearing it.
What happens when AI finally matches the work marketers do?When those three conditions are met, AI doesn’t just produce more; it produces better work. Plus, it frees up marketers to spend their energy on what they were actually hired to do: apply the taste, judgment, and creativity that create real impact. Marketers have done their part. Now the tools need to do theirs.
Marketers have already proven they can get more out of AI than almost any other function. The only thing standing between that effort and real impact is whether the tools around them are finally built to keep up.
