The first three songs demonstrate they can write riff and guitar heavy radio-ready rock; the final three suggest they’re capable of more compelling songwriting. The EP opens with Bullet For A Heart a heavy, driving anthem that layers programmed textures beneath thick guitars, immediately establishing a polished yet muscular sonic identity. It’s a confident statement of intent, while the second track Holding For Dear Life leans into a swaggering Cult-like groove. A mid-song breakdown injects welcome intensity, although the opening pair occasionally hint at familiar territory rather than breaking new ground.

Still You’re Perfect is tailor-made to kick off a live set. Its hook lands almost instantly and the energy is undeniable. If there’s one criticism, it’s that the riff-driven approach risks sounding a little too similar to what has come before, even if the performance itself remains committed and convincing.
The EP finds another gear in its second half. Seize The Day broadens the band’s palette considerably. It feels less like a single and more like the type of deep album cut fans gravitate toward over time. The arrangement breathes, the dynamics open up, and the songwriting becomes noticeably more adventurous. In fact, there’s a strong argument that this song should appear earlier in the running order, as it better showcases the range Crashing Wayward is capable of delivering.

The fifth track Going Blind may be the EP’s high point. Opening with an infectious introduction before settling into another memorable groove, and is perhaps the centerpiece of The Fight Within and the moment where the band’s artistic ambitions become clearest. Closing track Brass Coffin serves as an effective coda, allowing the record to exhale rather than ending with another full-throttle assault. It reinforces the reflective themes running throughout the EP while providing a satisfying conclusion.
The opening half occasionally relies too heavily on familiar modern-rock conventions. Fortunately, the latter half pushes beyond those expectations, revealing a band increasingly comfortable taking creative chances.
