The late great Tina Turner is set to be honoured at the NRL grand final in October for her enormous contributions to the game.

Turner was recruited by NSW Rugby League (NSWRL) in 1988 to head up a campaign for the iconic Winfield Cup and attract new fans to the game.

The iconic marketing campaign saw Turner become the face of the NRL and her hit song (Simply) The Best became the sporting code's anthem in 1990.

It is rumoured that Ruva Ngwenya, who played Turner in the Australian production of Tina The Musical, will headline the pre-match entertainment and provide a moving tribute to the Queen of Rock and Roll.

The tribute will also mark the 30th anniversary of Tina's iconic performance at the 1993 NRL Grand Final, where she inspired the crowd by belting out her anthem.

The wildly successful campaign saw Tina re-record the song with Jimmy Barnes in 1992, when she travelled to Australia to film an advertising campaign.

Turner died aged 83 on May 24, following a long illness, prompting an outpouring of public tributes around the world.

She first changed the direction of rugby league with the 1989 campaign featuring her hit What You Get Is What You See, which she filmed in the UK alongside Manly great Cliff Lyons and ex-Cronulla hardman Gavin Miller.

But it was her 1990 ad, filmed in Australia and featuring all the game's top players, that now eternally sits in NRL folklore.

Known for such hits as Nutbush City Limits, Proud Mary and River Deep - Mountain High, it was (Simply) The Best that league fans will remember most fondly Down Under.

(Simply) The Best is now synonymous for many Aussies with rugby league, because it changed the game forever.

Turner, who famously hails from Nutbush, Tennessee, would go on to become a footy icon.
