Calgary Mayor Jeromy Farkas’s Pacific Crest Trail hike — a soul-searching endeavour he embarked on after losing the 2021 election — is the subject of a new documentary coming out next month.

In a social media post sharing a montage of self-shot clips from the film, Farkas said the full-length documentary details his 172-day, 4,300-kilometre trek from Mexico to Canada in 2022, which raised more than $200,000 for Big Brothers, Big Sisters Calgary.

He said the documentary will be screened “for one night only” at Canyon Meadows Cinema on Sept. 16.

“Four years after walking 4,300 km from Mexico to Canada in 172 days, I’m thrilled to share the full adventure, with every dollar raised supporting Big Brothers Big Sisters,” he wrote.

Farkas’s hike preceded his successful run for the mayoralty last fall — his second attempt at council chamber’s central seat.

After serving as the Ward 11 councillor from 2017 to 2021, he ran for mayor that fall, finishing second to his then-council colleague, Jyoti Gondek.

“When 273,685 people tell you to take a hike. . . you better make it a big one!” Farkas wrote, alluding to the number of Calgarians who didn’t vote for him in 2021.

He said the months-long trek up the PCT, which covered a marathon distance every day for 100 days, was inspired by his grandmother Elizabeth Ptycia, a teacher in Dover who passed away during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Over the next 3,200 miles and 172 days, I crossed blistering deserts, snow-covered mountain passes, rushing rivers, and wildfire zones, experiencing some of the most beautiful and unforgiving terrain in North America,” Farkas said. “Along the way, I met trail angels, fellow hikers, and small-town communities whose generosity and kindness became the true heart of the trail.”

Tickets are being sold for the Sept. 16 screening — an event called From the Trail to the Chamber — on the Big Brothers, Big Sisters Calgary website for $40.
