Happiness turned into sorrow for Marie Marseille, as a Los Angeles Police Department officer fatally shot her dog, Jamison, while she was celebrating the New York Knicks’ NBA championship.
Per FOX 11 Los Angeles, the fatal incident occurred outside Marseille’s Canoga Park home on Saturday night. Marseille originally hails from New York, and the Knicks won the 2026 NBA championship that day.
Marseille, who is a nurse, was said to be watching the Knicks’ victory. Jamison, a Golden Saint Berdoodle, was also dressed in a Knicks jersey.
During the celebrations, officers with the LAPD responded to the apartment complex after a neighbor made a report about loud voices and two women allegedly involved in a domestic violence incident.
Marseille, however, said she wasn’t with anyone when the officers responded to her home.
“I’m like, ‘Oh no, it’s just me,’” Marseille told the news outlet. “And then they saw Jamison, and the one officer said, ‘Put the dog away.’ I was like, ‘Yeah, no problem.’”
Marseille said that though she attempted to obey the order, Jamison stepped outside and approached an officer.
“The next thing I know, Jamison is lying on the ground,” she recalled. “But Jamison wasn’t baring his teeth, he wasn’t growling, he wasn’t aggressive, he wasn’t barking. He was just moving toward the officer.”

The incident was captured on video, and it went viral on social media. In the video, neighbors can be heard registering their displeasure with the officers’ actions.
“What is the purpose of all of you?” a neighbor is heard saying. “This is what we pay for?!”
“He’s my baby,” Marseille said while crying. “It doesn’t make any sense to me. I can’t make sense of anything.”
Responding to the incident in a preliminary report, the LAPD said that officers went to the address after they received a report about a woman who was inside an apartment unit and “screaming,” FOX 11 Los Angeles reported.
The responding officers said a large dog approached them while they were having a conversation with the woman in question. The officers subsequently told the woman to restrain the dog.
“The resident closed her door momentarily. She re-opened the door, and the dog exited the apartment. Once outside of the apartment, the dog charged at one of the officers, resulting in an officer-involved shooting,” the LAPD added.
The dog succumbed to its injuries at the scene, and the LA Department of Animal Services took custody of the deceased canine after arriving at the complex.
